Brenda's Testimony

About 12 years ago now I decided I wanted to enter the 'working' world again. Not that I had been idle for years; I'd been managing my own small interior design and curtain making business and this worked well whilst bringing up my four children. Being self-employed can be a very lonely place. I decided to wind up my business.

I'd heard about Women and Work so contacted them and went for an interview, the first interview in about 30 years! The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, made you feel relaxed and valued.

I was given the opportunity to join a course on Management. Completed the course successfully and my confidence grew. I volunteered for Citizens Advice Bureau at the same time completing a free computer course run by the Government. Whilst at CAB I was encouraged to apply for a paid job, a new project being managed by CAB, Age Concern and Welfare Rights. The position was a new one and needed to be organized. My application was successful and I started my new job. I spent nearly six happy years working for MKCash until I decided it was time to retire. I actually gained this position when I was 60 years of age, so it is never too late!!!

Women and Work gave me the confidence and reassurance I needed to get back into the world of employment.

Who knows, if I become tired of retirement Women and Work may find me knocking on their door again! I know I will find and warm welcome if I do.
